LEED Certification Program DESCRIPTION

Highlights

·     LEED was created by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) to improve design principles by increasing overall energy efficiency through conservation and preservation.

·     The LEED program requires a minimum Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) equal to or greater than 78 for New Construction, as calculated according to ASTM E1980.

·     American WeatherStar's Acrylic 210, Acrylic 211, Acrylic 211 HT and Silicone 410 coatings meet these requirements.

What Is Leed?

Founded by the U.S. Green Building Council approximately 10 years ago, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification program sets a national standard for achieving high-performance, energy-efficient, and economically viable buildings that enhance overall building performance through the application of sustainable design principles. The Green Building Rating System for new construction was developed and launched in March of 2000. The LEED program currently offers opportunities to earn points towards LEED certification by meeting criteria in six categories, including: sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, and innovation and design process. LEED establishes performance criteria for an individual building, but does not qualify products or companies.

Roof Requirements

The intent of the LEED roofing requirements is to reduce heat islands (thermal gradient differences between developed and undeveloped areas) thereby minimizing the impact on microclimate, human and wildlife habitat. LEED certification requires a minimum Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) of 78, as calculated according to ASTM E1980.

The LEED program uses a credit, or point system, to establish overall building performance based on a six category checklist. Each category has a different point potential. When the entire checklist is complete and all points are compiled, the total points fit into four categories: Certified (26-32 points); Silver (33-38 points); Gold (39-51 points); or Platinum (52-69 points). Category requirements vary by city or location; for example, San Diego currently requires most city-owned, new construction projects to obtain LEED's "Silver" certification or better.

To obtain the roofing credit, a LEED Letter Template, signed by the Architect, Civil Engineer or responsible party, referencing the building plan and certifying that the roofing materials comply with Energy Star label requirements and meet the emissivity or SRI requirements, must be provided to the UCGBC.
